Police Commander Killed in Kandahar Blast

Waris Achikzai, a commander of Kandahar's police special forces, was killed in a blast in Maiwand district on Sunday night, a source said. 

The incident occurred in Maiwand district after a vehicle was struck by a roadside mine, the source said, adding that “Basir Achikzai, police chief of Zherai district, was also in the same vehicle and was wounded.” 

“Basir Achikzai was on the way to Maiwand district to support local forces in fighting against the Taliban,” according to the source. 

However, local officials have not yet commented on the blast. 

Zherai, Maiwand, Arghandab and Dand districts of the province witnessed heavy clashes between the security forces and the Taliban in the past several months.
