Ghani Welcomes NATO's Support To Afghan Peace Process

President Ashraf Ghani said NATO allies are supporting Afghan government's peace efforts and that Kabul is committed to bringing more reforms to security sector.

President Ghani made the remarks at a gathering in Belgium following NATO heads of state summit in Brussel.

Ghani said explosions and suicide attacks cannot break the Afghan people’s will for having a better future.

“Bombs do not break a nation, they kill us, but they do not break our spirit," said Ghani.

The president said government will retire over 530 generals from the Afghan army and police which is a vast reform in security sector.

“The security sector is being reformed. This year alone, I have retired 535 police and army generals. Six years ago, this would have been thought an impossibility,” Ghani added.

Two days after the International Ulema Conference on Afghanistan in Saudi Arabia, Imam of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi said on Friday prayers that the Afghan war must end.

Imam of the mosque, Sheikh Abdul Bari Al-Thubaiti, said all Muslims want the war in Afghanistan to end.

“All Muslims, especially the Afghan people, are welcoming the peace conference held by the custodian of the two holy mosques and the Islamic Cooperation Organization. The demand of this conference is unity among the people and an end to the war,” he said.

NATO allies agreed at the Brussels Summit to fund Afghan forces through to 2024.
