Govt Spokesmen Criticized For ‘Wrong Information’ On Farah

Some spokesmen from key government organizations were criticized by journalists and activists for providing wrong information on social media about the fight in Farah City in the last three days.

The Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish, Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish and President Ashraf Ghani’s deputy spokesman Shahussain Murtazawi posted photots on social media about Farah conflict in recent days. But the photos were old.

In the first day of clashes in Farah, Najib Danish published a photo on his Facebook page captioned “the police force members from 444 Unit in Farah City” while the same photo was published two years ago a on page belonged to Special Forces.

There are some issues which have pushed government to hide information from the people, Mujib Khelwatgar, head of NAI, an organization supporting open media in Afghanistan, said.

In the second day of the conflict in Farah City, Murtazawi published photos on his Facebook with the caption “Taliban’s equipment seized by security forces”.

The photos however were published last year on another page of social media.

“Wrong information creates problems for media,” Nargis Horakhsh, a journalist, said.

Meanwhile, Radmanish sent some photos to media outlets attached in a press statement. He briefed journalists on the photos at a press conference. However, the photos did not belong to Afghan forces.

Kabul residents said such moves will affect people’s mindset about government.

"They are not telling the truth to the people,” a Kabul resident said.

“Today’s technology will not let the right information to remain hidden. Thus, government leaders and security departments should not give wrong information to the people,” another resident of Kabul said.

This comes after Farah City was attacked by the Taliban in which the group captured some of its parts, but government forces cleared the city of militants.

According to local officials, clashes are still ongoing in the outskirts of the city.
