Outrage Grows Among MPs Over Ghani’s Remarks

Wolesi Jirga speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi on Wednesday said that lawmakers will no longer consult government institutions to help resolve the issues of their constituents, adding that they will address the issues with the help of the authorities which have been assigned to them in accordance with the constitution.

MPs blasted President Ashraf Ghani after he criticized lawmakers for going to ministry’s and government departments and putting pressure on officials to hire their people.

MPs said Ghani’s remarks were an insult to the spirit of parliament and the lawmakers.

“These authorities have not been given as a gift to the national assembly,” said Ibrahimi referring to Ghani’s remarks.

Ghani Accused of Embezzlement

Meanwhile MPs claimed that the president has embezzled some three billion Afs from the national budget.

They said that over the past two months, Ghani also allotted over 22 million Afs to Hizb-e-Islami.

Ghani on Tuesday said at the 10th graduation ceremony of Afghan police forces from the national police academy that “hiring should be conducted based on the police’s rules and regulations and no more personal recommendations should be accepted.”

“We call on the members of the national assembly not to go to government institutions, if they go, it will be recorded and will be broadcast in the media,” said Ghani.

He warned MPs not to visit the Ministry of Interior for appointments or promotion of their relatives and friends in the ministry.

“I direct the Ministry of Interior that all administrative affairs of young officers, senior officers, appointments, changings, promotions and implementations should be done based on the regulations of administrative affairs of officers,” Ghani said.

“Any person who is appointed based on relations has escaped from the battlefield and the one who has been appointed by giving money that has been embezzled. I do not accept this condition.”

However MP’s hit back.

“Payment of 22 million Afs to Hizb-e-Islami during two months, Mr. President, you think, there are 62 parties registered by the ministry of justice, you don’t give the money to over 60 parties, but give it to one party,” said MP Shekiba Hashimi.

“When ARG (presidential palace) is involved in bribery and the lawmaker does not mediate, then who will? The media also covers it without justice, and when 1.3 million Afs is taken out from the pocket of the nation and allocated to the first lady, then the media keeps silent,” said MP Abdul Rahman Rahmani.

Despite repeated efforts, TOLOnews was not able to get comment from government and Hizb-e-Islami officials.
