Local IEC officials in Paktia province said that most biometric devices did not work through most of Saturday at Paktia polling stations.

But, election monitoring groups in the province have said votes must be invalidated in areas where biometric devices were not working.

“I had registered my ID at this center, they called me and I voted without going through biometric (system),” said Sidra, a resident of Gardez city

“Biometric devices worked only till 11:30, but later they weren’t functioning, then we stopped using the devices, later on the commission ordered us to continue the voting through the sticker code and ID numbers,” said Muskan, an election staff member.

“You are aware that the electoral complaints commission once again demonstrated its weakness, people used their votes even without going through biometric system, in areas where biometric devices were not working, elections held were worse than 2014 elections,” said Ehsan Hamidi, head of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) in Paktia.

A Paktia IEC employee said the biometric devices worked for only the first few hours and then stopped working.
