Dasht-e-Barchi Residents Finally Vote After Late Start

Thousands of people made their way to polling centers in Dasht-e-Barchi, in the west of Kabul, on Sunday and were eventually able to vote but were again made to wait as many centers opened late.

According to the IEC, 45 polling centers in Kabul did not open on Saturday as scheduled. Many of these were in the western part of Kabul.

On Saturday, a large number of polling centers in the west either opened late or did not open at all. As a result the people who were not able to vote, were given a chance to do so on Sunday.

On Sunday, residents again criticized the IEC for making them wait and for not opening the centers on time.

Residents also said they were made to wait in long lines due to the slow voting process and problems with the biometric system.

“We came yesterday, but the process did not start. Finally, today I was able to vote,” a resident from the area said.

Electoral officials meanwhile said the voter turnout on Sunday in the west of Kabul had been considerable.

According to the IEC by Saturday evening over 1 million people had voted in Kabul.
