Women Make Up 40 Percent of Herat Voters

Officials from the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Sunday said that over 320,000 people cast their ballots in Saturday’s parliamentary elections in the western province of Herat, of which almost 40 percent were women.

“Overall there were 300 polling stations of which 275 centers remained operational throughout the day of elections,” said Ahmad Shah Qanooni, from Herat’s IEC office.

Herat governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi has also expressed satisfaction over the high voter turnout in the province.

“Our people largely participated in the elections, especially our sisters, from early in the morning till late night. They lined up at the polling stations, waited there to use their votes. It was really a big moment and I thank the faithful people of Herat who by their presence at polling stations gave a strong response to the enemies of Afghanistan,” said governor Rahimi.

Meanwhile, the site office of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) has said that up to now over 600 complaints were lodged by the public regarding electoral fraud and other irregularities.

“We registered over 649 complaints,” said IECC site chief Fatima Baqiri.

According to officials, after Kabul city, Herat city registered the second highest number of voters.

“Elections were in 17 districts of Herat out of 19 districts,” said General Abid, the commander of 207 Zafar Army Corps.
