Provincial officials said an Afghan woman charged with adultery was executed in public by the Taliban Sunday in Badghis, a western Afghan provinceA Taliban commander, Mullah Mohammad Yusuf said the lady was a widow and was sentenced to death because she had become pregnant.
Some years ago, the widow, 35, lost her husband and the Taliban detained her on charges of having sex with another man. The widow was given a dozen of lashes and was then shot three times in the head, provincial officials say.
"The woman was executed yesterday, and after being tortured and lashed she was shot dead," said Badghis provincial Police Chief, Ghulam Mohammad Sayedi.
Badghis, a western Afghan province, is relatively unstable and out of the control of the central government.
It is quite a while that such incidents take place in Afghanistan. Last year, the Taliban shot three men dead for alleged cooperation with the foreign forces.
Human Rights representatives in western Afghanistan strongly condemn the Taliban's action.
