At least five Taliban militants were killed in a separate joint operations by Afghan and Nato forces in southern Helmand province on Saturday night, local officials said on Sunday.

The operations were launched in Sangin and Gereshk districts of Helmand province during which five Taliban militants were killed, including three key persons named Mullah Faizani Farooqi, Mullah Abdul Satar and Jahangir, said Dawood Ahmadi, a spokesman for governor of Helmand told TOLOnews.

Three other Taliban militants were captured during the operation, he added.

Afghan forces, Nato troops and civilians suffered no casualties in the operations, Mr Ahmadi said.

Afghan and forces have increased military operations in the province recently to clear militants.

In comes as foreign forces recently handed over security responsibility for Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand, to Afghan security forces.
