The US ambassador to Afghanistan on Saturday said that the combat troops could stay in Afghanistan after 2014, a deadline that White House set for withdrawal.
Mr Crocker told reporters that if the Afghan government wanted the US troops to stay longer, the withdrawal could be slowed down.
"They would have to ask for it. I could certainly see us saying, ‘Yeah makes sense," Crocker said.
There are around 90,000 US troops in Afghanistan fighting insurgents.
Crocker's comment comes as the Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other Afghan officials called for political and military support for at least another decade at the Bonn conference in Germany on December 5.
Delegations of more than 100 countries at the Bonn conference vowed to support Afghanistan for another decade.
