The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday said Afghanistan will open an embassy in Greece to assist thousands of illegal Afghan immigrants.

Ministry spokesman Janan Musazai said that the embassy in Athens should be open by the end of March.
He also said that the ministry will close its embassy in Bulgaria at the same time.

Nearly 50,000 Afghans enter Greece illegally each year. Most are either caught and jailed, or find themselves stranded with no money and no documents, Mr Musazai added.

More than 100 Afghans were recently released from Greek jails, the spokesman said.
