The Taliban have kidnapped a member of Afghan Peace Council, Shafiullah Shafi, in eastern province of Kunar, Reuters reported.

Maulawi Shafiullah Shafi has reportedly disappeared on Friday in Asmar district of Kunar province.

Reports say that Mr Shafi had travelled to Kunar from Kabul to encourage insurgents to join the peace and reconciliation programme.

A delegation of 70 members has travelled to Kunar in an effort to free him.

No groups including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Kunar provincial governor Fazlullah Wahidi said that Maulawi Shafi was carrying a letter from a senior member of the peace council to the insurgents in Kunar.

Meanwhile, Kunar Police Chief has said that Mr Shafi didn't alert them about his travel to Asmar district.

"He went to Asmar without informing us. We don't know where and how he went missing," the Police Chief said.
