At least five insurgents were killed in an attack on an Afghan border police checkpoint in eastern Nangarhar province near the Pakistan border on Sunday night, local officials said.
Three other insurgents were injured in the attack.
The attack began around 12:00 AM and continued until 03:00 AM in Lalpoor district of province, a spokesman for border police in east Afghanistan Adris Momand said.
"Several insurgents' attacked an Afghan border police checkpoint in the district in which most of the insurgents were Pakistani," he said.
There were no Afghan border police casualties during the operation, Momand said.
Lalpoor district shares a border with Pakistan and insurgents frequently target border police checkpoints in the district.
Meanwhile, also in Nangarhar, a joint convoy of Afghan and foreign forces was targeted by armed insurgents Sunday.
Spokesman of Shamshad Zone 202 said the attack took place in Bati Gut around 11:00 AM yesterday when a joint convoy of Afghan and foreign forces faced an ambush of armed insurgents.
There were no reports of casualties among the security forces, the spokesman added.
