The former head of Hajj and Islamic Affairs in southwestern Nimroz province Maulawi Sarwar Baloch was assassinated on Thursday evening outside his home, local officials said.
The Baloch tribal elder was in front of his house when unknown armed men shot him, the provincial police chief Mohammad Musa Rasoli told TOLOnews.
He said investigations are underway into who carried out the attack but it is believed that the Taliban was behind it.
Nimroz MP Farida Hamidi said Thursday that Sarwar had been threatened multiple times by insurgents with death.
*An earlier version of this story said Sarwar Baloch was head of Hajj and Islamic Affairs in Nimroz. This was incorrect. At the time of his death he was no longer serving in this position.
