An Afghan police officer and five Taliban insurgents were killed in clashes in eastern Nuristan province on Friday, local officials said.

Four other Taliban insurgents were injured during the skirmishes.

The incidents took place in Kamdish district of the province yesterday morning and continued until night, provincial police chief Ghulamullah Nuristani said.

"They wanted to attack the Kamdish district governor compound but we knew that they were attacking. We were ready. When they came we started clashes with them," he said.

There were no civilians casualties during the battles, he added.

Kamdish district borders Pakistan and insurgents frequently target local troops.
