Gunmen shot dead an Afghan doctor in southern Helmand province on Tuesday afternoon for motives that are not yet clear, local officials said Wednesday.

The shooting happened in Helmand's capital, Lashkar Gah, after the doctor left his clinic to go home. The gunmen shot at and killed him while he was walking in the street, provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Nabi Elham said.

"The gunmen started firing at him while he was walking home. The reason for the attack is not yet clear, but it seems that it's because of family violence," Elham said.

The police have started investigating the incident, he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
