Formal talks on a security agreement between Afghanistan and the US began Thursday to decide on America's military commitment to Afghanistan after the end of Nato's Isaf mission in 2014.
However, reaching the deal is not expected to be smooth with officials saying it may take up to a year before an agreement is reached and Afghanistan's neighbours expected to protest the presence of US forces in the region.
Pakistan released nine key members of the Taliban from jail on Thursday according to a decision taken during the visit of Afghanistan's High Peace Council to Islamabad this week.
The HPC said they only agreed over eight members for release, but did not disclose their names.
