Anyone found guilty of killing women and girls will be executed, the Attorney General's office warned Thursday after another girl was murdered this week apparently for refusing an offer of marriage.

Deputy Attorney General Rahmatullah Nazari said with reported cases of violence against women on the rise, the penalties will be tough.

Political leaders who met with President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday to discuss the 2014 presidential election fear Karzai is using his power to challenge measures intended to combat fraud.

Although Karzai has made it clear he will not challenge the next election himself, some politicians are anxious that he will use his power to ensure his preferred successor is elected.

The Afghan government is attempting to limit the freedom of the media in Afghanistan with its latest decree on footage restrictions, media watchdog Nai said on Thursday.

"There are concerns that the government is trying to impose sanctions and limitations on the Afghan media to further limit them," Nai head Sediqullah Tawhidi told TOLOnews.
