An Iranian man was arrested in Afghanistan's western Herat province on Thursday in possession of 59 kg of narcotics, officials said.

Herat Provincial Police Chief Sayed Aqa Saqib said counter narcotics police arrested the man as he was attempting to cross the border into Iran.

The narcotics were hidden in an oil truck which was waiting to travel into Iran, which shares a border with Heart province, he added.

"This is the fourth Iranian citizen who has been arrested by Herat counter-narcotic police during the current year," Saqib said, adding that there were also a number of Iranians in prison for smuggling.

It comes as Herat counter narcotics police and other security agencies said more than 100 people have been arrested in the past three months in connection with drug smuggling.
