An officer from the Afghan intelligence agency---the National Directorate of Security (NDS)-- was assassinated by unknown armed men riding on a motorcycle in Kabul, and his driver was badly wounded.
The NDS officer, named Colonel Jan Mohammad Amin, was gunned down on Tuesday afternoon while he was riding toward home from work. The incident took place in PD8 of Kabul city.
Meanwhile, residents in Kabul have strongly criticized the government’s security strategy amid a dramatic rise in the number of targeted killings in the capital.
They said that the government has failed to fix the fragile security situation in Kabul despite recently announcing a new security charter for the city.
“Who will give food to my children now,” said Adila, the widow of the NDS officer.
“My father is not the first nor the last one, if they (govt officials) cant bring justice and security, they must step down so that a truthful person can run the country. We are really tired of the war,” said Sitara, the daughter of the NDS officer.
Over recent months the PD8 area of Kabul has witnessed several incidents of targeted killings and armed robberies.
“He was killed in broad daylight in front of the people. There is insecurity, robbers and plundering in PD8, there is no accountability,” said Samirullah, a resident in Kabul.
“Three or four months have passed since the government started its security charter, but the scale of assassinations and terror has increased,” said Khan Aqa, a resident in Kabul.
In a recent criminal incident, two armed women entered a beauty salon in Kabul and stole all the jewelry of a bride.
“They were two women and they robbed the beauty salon,” said Mushtaq Hussain, a resident in Kabul.
“Security situations in PD6, PD8, PD18 and PD13 have been fragile over the recent weeks,” said Ali Ahmad, a resident in Kabul.
“You can't walk on the street at 8:00 or 9:00 during the evening, there are robbers,” said Samad Khan, a resident in PD8.
Officials at the Kabul police department have said that police are investigating all incidents.
