Hekmatyar in Pakistan: 'US Defeated in Afghanistan'

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of the Hizb-e-Islami party, at an Islamabad press conference on Tuesday said that the United States has been "defeated in Afghanistan," adding that Washington has "no choice except to leave the country."

Regarding the current peace process between the negotiating sides in Doha, Hekmatyar said that the current talks in Doha are between the team of the Arg (Presidential Palace) and the Taliban, stating that the Doha talks are not intra-Afghan talks.

“Current talks in Doha are between the team of Arg (Presidential Palace) and the Taliban. These talks are not intra-Afghan talks, because there is no presence of many Afghan political parties in these talks, we are not there. There is a need for consensus first so that we can go towards talks with a unified idea,” he said.

In Pakistan, Hekmatyar met with top Pakistani officials, including Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

“The Prime Minister underscored the importance Pakistan attaches to the fraternal Afghan people and reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to foster closer cooperation with Afghanistan,” the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, citing the meeting between Imran Khan and Hekmatyar.

On the Afghan peace process, the statement said: “The Prime Minister expressed best wishes for successful outcome of the Afghan peace process as Pakistan had the highest stake in peace and stability in the region. He reiterated his long-standing position that there was no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan and that an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process was the only way forward.”

According to the statement, Imran Khan described the talks in Doha as a historic chance for peace.

“The Prime Minister noted that Intra-Afghan Negotiations provided a historic opportunity for the Afghan leadership to establish lasting peace. Underlining the positive contribution made by Pakistan in facilitating the Afghan peace process, the Prime Minister hoped that the Afghan parties would work to secure an inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive political settlement,” according to the statement.

The Pakistani leader also warned against the damaging role of "spoilers", within and outside Afghanistan.

The Pakistani Prime Minister said Pakistan would continue to facilitate people-to-people exchanges, promote Afghan investments, and enhance programs for human resource development and capacity-building of Afghans, especially in the education and health sectors.
