Afghan Journalist Killed, 5th in 2 Months

A journalist in Ghazni, Rahmatullah Nikzad, who was also head of the journalists' union in the province, was killed in an attack by armed men this evening, the provincial police said.

Ghazni police said that the journalist was killed by unknown armed men in front of his home.

He had worked for Al Jazeera and the Associated Press.

He is the fifth journalist killed in the last two months in the country.

Amid an increase of threats against media workers in Afghanistan, journalists on Saturday called on the government to launch an investigation into recent attacks that killed several journalists in the country.

Journalists said that lack of attention to the investigation of attacks against media workers will cause severe harm to press freedom in the country.

Former TOLOnews presenter Yama Siawash, Radio Azadi reporter Elyas Daee, Enekaas TV's presenter in Nangarhar Malala Maiwand, and Ariana News presenter Fardin Amini all have been killed in different incidents since November 7.

The Taliban in a statement denied involvement in the attack on the Ghazni reporter.
