Afghanistan Expels Top UNICEF Official

The Afghan government on Wednesday announced that President Ghani has ordered Mohammed Mohammedi, UNICEF'S chief of immunization for the polio program, to be expelled from Afghanistan for "lack of transparency" and "disregarding the president."

Sources in the Presidential Palace have said that Mohammedi, who is a citizen of France, was also involved in the investment of $1.5 million for the production of low-quality soap in Afghanistan.

UNICEF has rejected these allegations.

On Monday, Ghani in a virtual meeting with Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, held talks about the anti-polio campaign in Afghanistan.

“Lack of transparency in the spending and disregard of the president—based on the presidential order, he has to leave the country within 24 hours,” said Dawa Khan Menapal, a deputy spokesman to the president.

But, the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has said that it was unaware of the expulsion.

“I don’t have any information about the UNICEF employee so far, it could be a new development,” said Attorney General Farid Hamidi.

“Financial expenditures in Afghanistan should be carried out in a transparent way by the donor institutions, the people of Afghanistan and the government should be aware of it,” said Mir Jan Rasekh, an official of the Ministry of Public Health.

According to sources, the UNICEF official was also travelling in areas under the control of the Taliban.

“The Taliban do not ask UNICEF to pay 'tolls,' they do not ask for tolls  from vaccination and other activities of UNICEF,” said Sayed Akbar Agha, a former member of Taliban.

After Pakistan, Afghanistan is the second country on earth where polio is still paralyzing the children.

On Thursday, the first polio case was recorded in Andar district of Ghazni province, which is the first case in 2021.
