Ex-Police Officer, Poverty Stricken, Commits Suicide

Shakir, 38, a police officer of the former government has committed suicide due to poverty and unemployment.

Shakir’s family, which lives in the Asmar district of Kunar province, says he served as a police officer for 16 years, but following the collapse of Ashraf Ghani’s government, he lost his job and recently committed suicide due to poverty and unemployment.

According to his family, Shakir did not receive his last three months' salary. He is survived by two wives, seven children and his mother.

“My husband spent 16 years of his life as a police officer. At the end, he was not given the salary for the last three months. He committed suicide because of poverty. We have lost our only breadwinner,” said Sediqa, Shakir’s wife.

Wajida, his second wife, said six years have passed since she married Shakir and now she has a daughter. She says they do not have anyone else to feed the 10-member family.

“With Shakir’s suicide, 10 people have lost their breadwinner,” said Bibi Hamima, Shakir’s mother.

The family members said they face a very bad economic situation and urged humanitarian organizations to help them.
