Qualified Academics Should Oversee Universities: Union

The Afghanistan University Teachers Association in a statement urged the Taliban caretaker government to assign experienced, professional figures to lead academic institutions.

The statement further said that academic organizations will move toward a crisis without professional figures leading.

The statement comes as Mohammad Ashraf Ghairat has been appointed as Kabul University chancellor.

“The universities depend not on any special political system. In the universities, there are people who belong to Afghan society," said Dr. Esmatullah Sajad, the deputy head of the union.

At universities and academic institutions, experts and experienced persons with high academic status are appointed, the statement said.

Sayed Baqer Mohseni, a university professor, said: “The members of the scientific board, and teachers, should be selected internally, otherwise, there will be problems in the universities.”

Obaidullah Wardak, a university professor, said that as the government universities have been closed in the country for more than a month, students are calling for their reopening.

Farkhunda Muhibi said: “We ask them to answer our demands. They should say whatever they have for regulations and laws. Based on those regulations, we will go our way."

According to the statement, the universities are not based on a political system, therefore, the universities must appoint educated and professional figures.

The Ministry of Higher Education of the caretaker government has announced that government universities will open in accordance with Islamic regulations in the near future.
