Danish Official in Pakistan Warns of Afghan "Safe Haven"

Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod expressed concerns over the potential of Afghanistan becoming a “terror safe haven," saying that Denmark would work with the world countries to find a way forward for Afghanistan.

He made the remarks at joint press conference on Friday after meeting his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Islamabad.

Qureshi, reacting to the bill introduced by the US Senate Committee to assess Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan for the past 20 years, said that it was an attempt to "pass the buck."

“They have to understand the positive role played by Pakistan in facilitating the peace process,” Qureshi said.

Although Kofod said his country would not recognize the “Taliban” government, he said that that Denmark would not “turn its back” on the people of Afghanistan.

He mentioned the threat of terrorism: “I mentioned very clearly that if Afghanistan develops into a breeding ground, a safe haven for international terrorist groups, it is something that will affect all of us and we should avoid that."

The Pakistan foreign ministry said in a statement that Qureshi during the meeting said that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan and the region.

He also called for the engagement of the international community in Afghanistan, saying there was an urgent need to facilitate humanitarian assistance to the country.
