Afghans Stranded in India Begin to Return

The evacuation of the Afghans stranded in India began after a longtime lull as the flights have been suspended between Kabul-Delhi following the fall of the rapid former government.

Ambassador of former Afghan government to Delhi, Farid Mamondzai said on Saturday that many of these stranded people have come to India for medical treatment.

“This process will be continuing in the next days to evacuate those Afghans stranded after August 15th in Delhi,” he said.

There are some stranded people who have spent over two months on the brink to catch flights to Afghanistan.

“We thank the Afghanistan embassy for helping us to be evacuated vi Iran transit,” said, an Afghan citizen, who was waiting for his flights at Delhi Airport.

Another Afghan citizen said: “We fortunately succeeded with the help of the Afghanistan embassy and India foreign ministry, to go from Delhi to Tehran and from there to Afghanistan.”

The Afghanistan embassy said that at least 106 stranded people were airlifted to Tehran, capital of Afghanistan’s neighboring country, Iran. The passengers have been shifted from Tehran to Kabul.

Mamondzai said, “our second attempt is to facilitate charter plans between Kabul and Delhi, thus our citizens will go (home) via this process and our third attempt is to resume the flights of Kam Air, Ariana and other airlines between Kabul and Delhi.”

Refugee rights activist, Nisar Ahmad Shirzai said, “with the blockage of flights between Afghanistan and India, these passengers stranded here , there number approximately reached to 1,200 people. They were facing with severe economic problems, they didn’t have money for rent and expenses,” said, a refugee rights activist, Nisar Ahmad Shirzai. “There evacuation is being done via an Iranian airline company, the people who had children and older patients were giving priority.”

This comes as these stranded people earlier called on the Afghan officials to facilitate their withdrawal from India.
