The United States has appointed ambassador A. Elizabeth Jones as the new coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts, US Department of State said on Tuesday.

Jones is succeeding Ambassador John Bass who temporarily had taken the role in August to evacuate American citizens and local Afghan partners from Afghanistan.

Jones will assume oversight of the entire Afghanistan relocation efforts and will facilitate the department of individuals from Afghanistan to their onward relocation and resettlement in the United States, the State Department said in a statement.

The mission that Jones will lead is consist of “four primary areas of responsibility: relocation out of Afghanistan, third-country transit and processing outside the United States, resettlement in the United States, and overall outreach and engagement,” the statement said.

The new appointment followed a two-day meeting between officials of the United States and the Islamic Emirate in Doha this week in which the officials in addition to other issues, discussed safe passage for foreign nationals and Afghans wishing to leave Afghanistan.

US State Department has labeled the discussion as productive adding concerns around security and terrorism, safe passage out of Afghanistan, humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and human rights were discussed.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Tuesday the talks were as largely positive.

"The delegation made clear, as we consistently have, that the Taliban will ultimately be judged not only on its words but solely on its actions," Price said.

Price said a separate meeting was also made on Tuesday with the Taliban delegation in which officials from the European Union were also involved.

This week, Spain also announced that it has resumed evacuation of its nationals and their local Afghan partners who are eligible for evacuation.
