Girls in Balkh Again Attending School

School-aged girls expressed happiness over their schools being opened in the northern province of Balkh.

Since the fall of the former government, the schools remained closed for girls beyond grade six, but students in Balkh and two neighboring provinces have been allowed to attend school.

These students called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen schools for girls across the country.

“We are very happy about the reopening of our schools and we hope the schools in 33 provinces will be reopened so that girls can continue their education,” said Ilham Sadat, a student.

A teacher at one of the girls' schools in Balkh, Sima Safa, said, "The school is opened for the students. Everyday, the students from grade one to 12 are present at the school.”

The provincial educational department facilitates girls' access to schools.

“They are coming to their lessons. The girls’ schools are opened. There is no problem from the side of the Islamic Emirate. We have segregated the girls’ classes from the boys,” said Mohammad Naeem Balkhi, head of Balkh's education department.

This comes as girl students from the neighboring provinces of Kunduz and Jawzjan have also recently been allowed to attend schools.

Meanwhile, the students across the country hope this process gets extended to other provinces, and therefore they can also have access to education.
