At least 600 Daesh members were arrested within the past three months across the country, the intelligence department said on Wednesday.
“In several parts of the country, nearly 600 members of Daesh who were involved in subversive acts and killings were detained,” said Khalil Hamraz, a spokesman for the intelligence department, speaking to reporters in the government's information and media center. “The detainees include some top members. They are in the prisons.”
This comes as the neighboring and regional countries have repeatedly voiced concerns over Daesh activities in Afghanistan.
However, according to Hamraz, the security situation was satisfactory in Afghanistan. Hamraz said that 70 people were arrested on abduciton charges.
Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, who also participated in the press conference, once again downplayed Daesh as not a major threat in Afghanistan. He said that 21 Daesh sanctuaries were eliminated in several provinces.
“Our efforts are continuing to root out (Daesh) but the threats have been reduced to a great extent,” he said.
But some political analysts believe that Daesh would not only pose a threat to Afghanistan but would put the regional countries at high risk as well.
“Daesh in the region is a great threat to Afghanistan and other regional countries,” said Akhtar Mohammad Rasikh, a political analyst.
“Daesh joined other terrorist groups active in the region and wanted to create big security problems for the Taliban,” said Ajmal Suhail, head of the Paikar Ba Harrasaf Gani organization in Germany.
