Roads connecting districts and provincial centers in 10 provinces have been blocked due to heavy rainfall and snowfall, the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said on Wednesday.  

At least nine people were killed because of avalanches and flooding in 30 of 34 provinces, the ministry said. 

“Around nine people have been reported dead across the country due to rainfall,” said Mawlawi Inayatullah Shuja, Deputy of ANDMA. 

The floods also inflicted financial loss in the southern and southwestern provinces. 

“(Floods) brought a lot of problems. They destroyed main residences, many shops and also vehicles,” said Mohammad Naseem, a resident of Kandahar.  

The Islamic Emirate appointed a commission, led by First Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, to address the problems of people affected by the recent natural disasters in the country.  

“The National Disaster Management Authority announced an emergency. I must say the ministry is fully prepared for any kind of natural disaster,” said Inamullah Samangani, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.  

The Ministry of Public Works said that efforts are underway to repair the damaged areas of major roads.

“The paths of Haji Gak, Dasht-e- Diwali, Panj Aab and Bazar-e-Siah are closed. The ministry is making serious efforts there,” said Hamidullah Musbah, deputy spokesman for the ministry.  

Based on the numbers of the National Disaster Management Authority, over 40 residences have been destroyed due to recent natural disasters in Nuristan, Zabul, Nimruz and Kunar provinces.
