Protesters Call for Release of Female Activists

A number of women staged a demonstration in Kabul on Saturday, calling for the release of the remainder of detained female activists who went missing. They held the protests following the release of women’s rights activist Parwana Ibrahimkhil.

Ibrahimkhil said she was detained by the Islamic Emirate. She went missing for around three weeks.

However, the Islamic Emirate has repeatedly said it has no information about the fate of the missing women.

Meanwhile, two foreign journalists working on assignment for the UNHCR who had been arrested by the Islamic Emirate forces in Kabul were released on Saturday, the Islamic Emirate said.

The protestors called for the release of rest of the women who went missing over the last month.

“We held a demonstration in reaction to all the problems created by the Taliban group for the people of Afghanistan,” said Monisa, a protestor.

Parwana Ibrahimkhil went missing for three weeks.

“You (Islamic Emirate) detained them, without having any female soldier, this is against Islam,” said Taranom Saeedi, a relative of Parwana Ibrahimkhil.

A spokesman for the Islamic Emirate said an investigation is underway to find information about the fate of the missing women.

“We should ask our own sources and then, based on that, will give you information,” said Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.

The missing female activists sparked reactions at the national and international level.
