MoI to Kabul Police: 'Professionals' Must Run Checkpoints

At a security meeting, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) leadership ordered security forces to not open fire on individuals at checkpoints.

Officials of the Ministry of Interior held a meeting with the commanders of police districts of Kabul city and security commanders in Kabul’s districts and called on them to employ professionals at checkpoints.

The order comes a day after the Ministry of Interior said it had set up a special unit to monitor checkpoints in Kabul.

“A driver does not know what the security forces tell him. To stop? Firing in such situations has happened repeatedly, and should not happen anymore. Professional forces should be at the checkpoints,” said Mawlawi Zainullah Aber, head of the office of the Minister of Interior.

“Police should respect the honor of the people, and they have to maintain the lives and property of people,” said Mawlawi Sultan Ahmad, the general director of the auditing department.

Meanwhile, several residents of Kabul expressed their optimism over the decision made by the Ministry of Interior, while others claimed that the security forces mistreat the people.

“At the checkpoints, one of them says stop, the other says go, drivers cannot decide what to do, so they fire in such circumstances,” said Obaidullah.

At the same time, officials at the security department of Kabul said that at least 70 individuals have been arrested in connection with different cases of murdering, kidnapping and armed robbery in Kabul.

“The criminals and unruly people were arrested, their documents are going to be sent to the related courts,” said Mawlawi Kamran, head of the criminal investigation.

Military experts believe that people will lose trust if the leadership of the security organizations does not prevent security forces from mistreating the people.
