Zahra Joya, an Afghan female journalist, was listed among 12 women recognized by Time Magazine for change-making leadership. 

The headline featuring Joya read: "Women of the Year, Twelve Leaders Working Toward a More Equal World." 

Joya, who is currently living in the UK, is a women's rights activist and the founder of Rukhshana Media.  

“My focus is very much on women’s rights. Our stories are about women,” she said.  

She studied law and political science, and has worked with several media organizations for more than ten years.  

Joya said that although she is living outside the country, her main focus is on the situation of women inside Afghanistan.  

“My selection by Time Magazine has given me hope that Afghan woman are not forgotten and that the work of Afghan women is still considered,” she told TOLOnews.  

Joya’s colleagues said that she has covered the existing problems against women in Afghanistan--- which is one of the main reasons for her success. 

“Zahra and her organization Rukhshana media, despite having less facilities, make good reports and this is the primary reason for her success,” said Abdul Wahid Haidari, a journalist.  

Based on available numbers, more than 70 percent of female journalists have lost their jobs since the fall of the former government.
