UNHCR Chief: Intl Community Has Expectations of Islamic Emirate

Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said the international community has expectations of the current Afghan government.

In a special interview with TOLOnews, Grandi said: “The international community has an expectation that security is maintained--that minority rights are respected—that girls can go to school and that women can work. These are important elements,” he said.

The UNHCR’s chief said the current amount of aid provided by the international community is insufficient to overcome the crisis in Afghanistan.

“That is in fact a challenge--at the moment only humanitarian assistance is coming. It cannot be forever. The country needs to move to recovery and development,” he said.

He also expressed concerns over a large displacement of people within Afghanistan.

“There is a very large displacement problem in the country,” he said.

Grandi said that they cannot directly address the problems of the Afghan refugees in Indonesia and that the situation depends on the conditions of the third countries, which usually takes some time to be process.
