US Welcomes Renewal of UNAMA’s Mandate

Washington’s special envoy for Afghan women, Rina Amiri, and the US Chargé d’Affaires, Ian McCary, has welcomed the renewal of UNAMA’s mandate in Afghanistan.

The two US envoys said the UNAMA mission is important as Afghanistan is facing severe economic and humanitarian crises.

“I welcome the Security Council’s adoption of a new mandate for UNAMA. The Security Council took an important step yesterday to underscore the importance of the UN’s continued work in Afghanistan as the country navigates a pivotal moment in its history,” McCary said.

“Grateful to Afghan women and UNSC partners, whose collective advocacy and leadership helped shape a strong UNAMA mandate that promotes the human rights of all Afghans,” said Rina Amiri, the US special envoy for Afghan women.

Naseer Ahmad Faiq, the charges d'affaires at the Afghan mission to the UN, said that UNAMA would continue its mission in consultation with the Afghan elites in the country.

“UNAMA will continue its mission in close consultation with the Afghan political players and current authorities to support the people of Afghanistan,” he said.

Analysts believe that UNAMA has the ability to help Afghanistan’s political structure overcome the political crisis.

“The renewal of the UNAMA mandate means the renewal of a political mission in Afghanistan. It is a political platform for encouraging and motivating the Taliban to form an inclusive and responsible government that would be ready to answer the questions of the world and the people of Afghanistan,” said Mahmood Raghi, a former diplomat.
