Forest Fire Continues in Nuristan for Tenth Day: Officials

The country's State Ministry for Disaster Management said they are unable to put out the fire that has been burning in the forests of eastern Nuristan province for ten days.

Mullah Janan Sayq, head of the State Ministry of Disaster Management's Emergency Operations Center, said firefighters were dispatched to the area but were unable to extinguish the wildfire due to a lack of advanced equipment.

“We have tried to put out the fire and sent the fire fighters. The Islamic Emirate is not able to-- as the fire is on the mountainous areas. The vehicles can’t go there. We have called in the choppers, but I don’t think the chopper could do it either,” he said.

He also stated that if required, neighboring countries will be called to assist in putting out the fire.

“We will try to overcome the fire; if not possible, we will ask the neighbors to help us,” said Mullah Janan Sayq, head of the Emergency Operations Center of the State Ministry for Disaster Management.

The fire in the forests of Nurgram district of Nuristan province has reached its tenth day. Although the cause of the issue has not been identified, officials said that one hundred and eighty-five acres of land have burmed as a result of this incident.

“The flames are huge and there is a wind as well. These mountains with woods provide incomes to the locals,” said a resident.

Meanwhile, economic analysts predict that the fire will have a negative impact on the living conditions of the people in the area.

This is the first time a fire of this scale has burned in the forests of eastern Nuristan province in recent decades.
