During a two-day visit to Tajikistan's capital, Dushanbe, US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Thomas West met with President Emomali Rahmon, Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, and other Tajik officials to discuss the country's shared interests with Afghanistan.

“US will continue to consult and work closely with Tajikistan on way ahead in Afghanistan,” West tweeted.

West has previously travelled to India, Turkey, and Uzbekistan to discuss Afghanistan with former government leaders, including Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, and officials from those countries.

“The United States is working to establish an inclusive government in Afghanistan in which all ethnic groups will participate in that government,” said Sayed Sajjadi, an expert on international relations issues.

“The United States has once again intervened in Afghanistan to secure its interests in the region, otherwise civil war could break out again,” said Javid Sangdel, political analyst.

The meetings of the US Special Representative for Afghanistan elicited a response from the current government.

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, called on the US special envoy to seek regional security in such trips.

“If the purpose of these trips is to legitimize people who have fled Afghanistan, the repetition of this is a big mistake and there is no benefit,” said Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman of the Islamic Emirate.

The US special envoy for Afghanistan has travelled to Tajikistan as a number of political opponents of the current government are reportedly in that country. It is unknown yet with whom he has met.
