UN Official Announces $10M Aid for Earthquake-Affected Afghans

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths announced a $10 million pledge to “help with the immediate response” to the vulnerable people in Afghanistan.

“Hundreds of people killed. Many more injured. Homes destroyed. Children buried in the rubble. The Afghanistan Earthquake is the latest tragedy to befall the country. I released $10 million from UN Central Emergency Response Fund,” Griffiths said on Twitter.

The aid provided by some foreign countries to the victims of the earthquake are as follows:

  • China $7.5 million
  • South Korea $1 million
  • Taiwan $1 million
  • European Union 1 million euro
  • UK 2.5 million pounds

“The committees are formed to distribute the aid. The aid is under assessment by the committees to take good care of it and distribute it to the people who deserve it,” said Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate.

Economist Sayed Masoud said injecting the fund through banks will revitalize the banks as well.

“All the aid provided by the world should be injected to the banking channels, including one billion Afs allocated by the government. When you move the (money) in the bank, it is strengthening the banking system,” he said.
