Qatar FM Says His Country Will Continue to Support Afghan People

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar in a meeting in Doha with Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid, the acting minister of defense of the Islamic Emirate, discussed the importance of national reconciliation, ensuring the rights of citizens, and a range of other topics.

In the meeting, Qatar's Foreign Minister, added that the Qatari government continues to support Afghanistan.

“HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs underscored the significance of working to achieve national reconciliation in Afghanistan, in addition to making sure that the Afghan people obtain their entire rights and secure a dignified life that includes the prosperity for all its segments, emphasizing the State of Qatar’s continued support for the Afghan people,” Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid welcomed the cooperation of Qatar.

“In this meeting, both sides discussed bilateral cooperation in security and defense sectors. Acting Minister of Defense welcomed the cooperation of Qatar and asked for more cooperation,” the Afghan Defense Ministry tweeted.

Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid in his official trip to Qatar met with a number of senior officials of Qatar and discussed a range of topics.

"The aim of Mullah Yaqoob Mujahid's trip to Qatar is to continue the implementation of the Doha Agreement, in which the Taliban had made assurances that the interests of the US and its allies in the region would not be threatened from Afghanistan," said Nasir Ahmad Tarekai, international relations expert.

The acting minister also met with Afghans living in that country during his visit to Qatar and assured them that he would share their challenges with the Qatari officials.

“This is an important trip, both economically and politically," said Najibullah Jami, university lecturer.

"What is important is that the Taliban should take basic steps in the formation of government, respect for human rights, and freedom of speech, so that we witness the opening of its relations with other countries,” said Sayed Javad Sajadi, international relations expert.

It has been nine years since Qatar hosted the political office of the Islamic Emirate, and currently it is one of the countries that plays the role of mediator between the Islamic Emirate and the international community.
