Blast at Kabul Cricket Stadium Sparks Reactions

A blast targeted the Kabul International Cricket Stadium amid an ongoing national tournament of Shapagiza and has sparked national and international reactions.

Former President Hamid Karzai condemned the blast and called it a terrorist incident.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said in a tweet that he “strongly condemn(s)” the attack which “claimed the lives of at least 19 civilians and caused additional casualties.”

“Attacks against civilians and civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” he said.

The US special envoy for Afghanistan, Thomas West, said that he was “deeply saddened” by reports of an explosion at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium during a cricket match.

“Violence serves no purpose and is not the answer for the people of Afghanistan,” he said.

The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Twitter condemned in “vigorous terms the blast that rocked Kabul International cricket stadium during a game.”

The UN Deputy special envoy and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, said he "strongly condemns today’s atrocious attack" targeting persons attending the match and sends condolences to affected families.

The Islamic Emirate has yet to comment on the matter.
