Kabul Residents Complain of Houses Destroyed By City Authorities

Some residents in PD17 of Kabul said that the municipality ordered their homes to be demolished without offering them housing. They stated that they are currently unable to buy another home because of financial difficulties.

"I bought this house for 150,000 Afs 15 years ago, but the municipality came and asked to demolish it because the road runs through here,” said Abdul Khair, a resident of Kabul.

“I took my family members to a garden in the village where I pitched a tent,” said Abdulrahman, a resident of Kabul’s PD17.

"Our homes are located far from the highway. The lengthy valley that sits in the middle of the road should be cleared if a road is intended to be built there. They should compensate for the demolition of our homes,” said Khwaja Mahmoud, another PD17 resident.

However, the Kabul Municipality said that in order to build the Kabul-North highway, they had ordered the demolition of 120 homes in the area.

According to municipality officials, people whose homes will be demolished will be compensated for the cost of building new ones.

"Those whose homes are destroyed will receive money based on the percentage of their homes that were destroyed, in accordance with the standards outlined in the table. However, since the land is government property, no money will be provided for the land itself; instead, only the building's cost will be covered. It will be paid following calculations and verification,” said Nematullah Barekzai, a representative of the Kabul Municipality.

The Kabul Municipality stated clearly that it plans to demolish homes in the 4th, 5th, and 15th PD of Kabul City in order to carry out urban projects.
