EU's Niklasson: Domestic Legitimacy Needed for Intl Recognition

The EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Tomas Niklasson, in a special interview with TOLOnews said that domestic legitimacy will pave the way for recognition of Afghanistan's current government.

The EU envoy said that he wants an Afghanistan where everyone's freedom and human rights are protected.

According to the EU envoy, the Islamic Emirate has not yet held a council of representatives with representation from both men and women for internal legitimacy.

“The Taliban have not explained what the system is in place, they have not been able to clarify whether the previous constitution is still in place or not, they have not made a commitment that would be a crucial and important step commitment to fully respect the United Nations charter without any reservations, these are steps they could take,” he said.

The EU representative for Afghanistan emphasized in the interview with TOLOnews that the EU wants an inclusive government to be established in Afghanistan.

“What I mean by an inclusive government in the country is not a list of people and it is not quota for Hazaras, Tajiks, men or women, but it is a system where--it is a process by which each adult Afghan man and woman has right to express himself and herself,” he said.

According to Tomas Niklasson, dialogue and interaction with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is the best way to solve the current problems.

“I remain convinced that engagement and dialogue is the best step forward. In some cases it will take time,” he said.

This comes as the Islamic Emirate has repeatedly criticized the international community's call for the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan as interference in the country’s internal affairs.
