Coppersmiths Out of Work as Households Use Plastic, Aluminum Items

Metalworkers, particularly coppersmiths, said that the high price of copper and the general economic trouble has caused them to close their shops.

“Our work situation is very bad bad, and it is getting worse because people now use nickel, aluminum and plastic,” said Asadullah, referring to bowls and basins used in households for cooking and washing.

“We asked the government to aid this field because our work is going to stop,” said Faridoon.

These metalworkers added that just four out of 280 copper workshops in Kabul remain.

“In the past, disease was less because people used copper,” said Gul Ahmad, a coppersmith.

Some residents of Kabul said that in the past, most people used copper, especially for cooking, cleaning and other household uses.

“People used ... copper pots and some other things,” said Amanullah, a Kabul resident.

“Most people used copper and if the items become dirty, they could be polished,” said Amanullah, a resident of Kabul.

With the decline of copper items in the markets, there is a concern that this traditional and historical industry is being destroyed.
