Pakistan Minister Claims Clashes At Durand Line Afghans 'Fault'

Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said on Monday that officials on the Afghan side "apologized" to Pakistan for firing at the Spin Boldak-Chaman crossing, clarifying that the “matter is now resolved”.

He made the remarks at the National Assembly of Pakistan.

“In the first round of fire, no casualties occurred. But later heavy weapons were used and because of that five of our civilians were killed and two others died on the way to Quetta,” Asif said.

In response, Asif said, Pakistan fired on the Afghan post which resulted in casualties of eight to nine Afghan soldiers.

“After that, the border security committee met again and it was agreed that Afghanistan was at fault,” he said.

"This is not the first time; a solution and a new approach are needed for this, and the committee that was appointed and the officials of this committee should know the cause of these incidents,” said Mohsen Dawar, a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan.

In reaction to the incident, the Foreign Ministry of Afghanistan released a statement saying that the Islamic Emirate is attempting to prevent such incidents and that Pakistan's government should also take steps to avoid such encounters.

"As far as I'm aware, several rounds of joint border committee talks have occurred. I believe there is a willingness and a hopeful view on both sides to deepen cooperation in regard to border issues,” said Nasir Kanani, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Iran.

"Respect for one another is the solution. If Afghanistan and its government, as well as the Afghan people, respect neighboring nations, they should also respect Afghanistan and its geography,” said Mohammad Nasir Haqqani, a political expert.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed concern over recent incidents between Islamic Emirate forces and Pakistani border guards and urged the Afghan government to stop border area conflicts between the two sides.

Earlier, local Kandahar province officials said that one of the Islamic Emirate's forces was killed in the incident.
