Host Countries Should Avoid Detaining Afghan Refugees: Minister

The acting minister of refugees and repatriation, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, said countries that host Afghan refugees should avoid their arrest.

Addressing a gathering in Kabul on Tuesday, Haqqani said that host countries should also avoid deporting Afghan refugees.

Haqqani stressed said countries should ensure the rights of refugees.

“I have this expectation and I call on them (countries that host Afghan refugees) to treat well with these brothers and avoid their harassment,” he said.

Meanwhile, a number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Iran and Turkey have expressed their deepest concerns about their situation.

They called on the Islamic Emirate to talk with host countries about their situation.

“We want to tell the current rulers of Afghanistan that Afghan refugees are going through a tough situation in Iran, Turkey and Pakistan. They should address their problems through diplomatic efforts,” said Zahir Chiragh, an Afghan refugee.

“Our countrymen in Pakistan, Iran and Turkey are facing many challenges. They are being harassed due to the lack of legal documents and are sent back home,” said Ahmad Faisal Nizami, an Afghan refugee.

This comes as millions of Afghan refugees are living in Iran and Pakistan. Afghanistan’s embassy in Islamabad said this week that at least 2,000 Afghan refugees have been arrested by Pakistani forces over the past three months. The embassy said that over 1,500 refugees are still in Pakistani forces' custody.
