Kabul Residents ‘Frustrated’ with Electricity Blackouts

Kabul residents on Monday said they are “frustrated” with electricity blackouts that have continued for the past three, leaving them with challenges amidst the cold winter.

The residents said they are provided electricity for four hours a day.

“Power cuts have increased. We just few hours of electricity a day. I don't know what is the issue,” said Shah Mahmoud, a Kabul resident.

“We don’t have electricity but we paid power bills the same as in the past," said Humayon, a Kabul resident.

The country’s power distributor, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat or DABS, said that imported electricity from Uzbekistan has decreased by 50 percent, but added that efforts are underway to address the issue.

“We provide electricity for three hours during the day and three hours at night,” DABS spokesman Hekmatullah Maiwandi said. “It is 10 hours for factories.”

He said talks are underway with Turkmenistan about the import of power to Afghanistan in the next year.

“We will have a trip where we will talk about an agreement in 2023,” Maiwandi said.

Turkmenistan media outlets have reported that the country will extend power distribution to Afghanistan.

Afghanistan imports 80 percent of its electricity from Central Asia and Iran.
