At least 16 people died in four different provinces in the past four days as a result of the severe cold wave in the country.
According to the State Ministry for Disaster Management, these deaths happened in Badghis, Nimroz, Faryab, and Ghazni provinces. More than 3,000 cattle also died due to exposure to the cold weather.
“People are having a lot of problems due to freezing weather in the country,” said Mullah Jan Sayeq, director of Risk Reduction of the State Ministry for Disaster Management.
The Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation’s Department of Meteorology said that this year's temperature is 12 degrees lower than the last year.
The Salang Pass in Parwan province as well as Ghor, and Paktia are among the coldest areas in the country, said the authority.
“The severe cold wave over the past week has affected many areas, particularly the western, northwestern, northern, and northeastern regions, as well as the country's central regions. According to a review of the weather, the temperature will continue to drop this week and the following week,” said Mohammad Nasim Muradi, the head of meteorology at the Ministry of Transport and Aviation.
Some residents of Badghis said the cold weather has made their lives difficult. They asked aid agencies to provide them the required support.
“Many cattle have perished due to the cold weather, and some people also have become seriously ill,” said Mohammad Naeem, a resident of Badghis.
“This cold weather affected all the poor people, and there is no one in the city, all the stores are closed, and there is no fuel,” said Feda Mohammad, a resident of Faryab.
This comes as the unprecedented drop in temperature has killed dozens of people over the past six days.
