Cold Wave, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Cause Over 100 Deaths in Afghanistan

More than 100 people have died of exposure to severe cold weather and carbon monoxide poisoning over the past two weeks, the State Ministry for Disaster Management said on Sunday adding that the deaths have happened in 15 provinces.

“At least 104 people have died in various provinces. At least 50 houses have been damaged or destroyed,” said Shafay Rahimi, a spokesman for the ministry.

Abdul Zahir, a resident of Ghor, said that he lost one of his children due to cold weather.

Zahir said that he is struggling with dire economic conditions.

“I didn’t have anything to burn. All the kids are sick. One of them was martyred and three others are in the hospital,” he said.

People said that vulnerable families are mostly victims of extreme cold weather in the country.

“Many families don’t have food to eat, water to drink and anything else to warm their homes,” said Mohammad Azim, a resident of Faryab.

Based on statistics from the Information and Culture Ministry, tens of thousands of livestock have perished due to cold over the past two weeks.
