Zardari Calls on Kabul to Remain Committed to Taking On Terrorism

Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that Pakistan "needs to see the will to take on terrorist elements" from the current Afghan authorities and that the optimal scenario is for the interim government to live up to its commitments regarding terrorism.

Zardari made the remarks in an interview with CNBC.

“The most realistic, practical and perhaps optimistic scenario is for the interim government in charge right now to live up to their commitment that they made before taking over--to their own people and to the international community--to ensure their soil is not used for terrorism,” he said.

The Islamic Emirate once again pledged that there will be no threat from Afghan soil to any world country.

“We don’t allow anyone to threaten other countries, particularly our neighbors from Afghan soil,” said Islamic Emirate’s spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid.

Zardari said that pressure will not help the situation in Afghanistan.

“I don’t think that they will respond to threats or pressure well. That is what we have seen over the past year. I think engagement is important but there has to be an environment conducive to have that engagement,” he said.

Political analysts said that Pakistan should stop interfering in Afghan affairs and that the Islamic Emirate should also prevent it.

“Any kind of remarks of the Pakistan officials in the international sphere regarding Afghanistan are obvious interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs,” said Hekmatullah Hekmat, a political analyst.

“Peace and stability in Afghanistan not only benefits the world and region but has a direct benefit for Pakistan,” said Ahmad Khan Andar, a political analyst.

Zardari said Pakistan's message to the current Afghan government is to "help us help them, ”in steps such as ending the ban on women's education.
